“In 1992, TAQA presented ‘… and they called her Silence’ exploring ritual, culture and sensuality. It was first performed at the 2nd Multicultural Theatre Festival and later in ‘Periodical’ as a double feature with Triquinuela. ”
I remember during our creative development period, we were visiting the family home of our choreographer, and her mother just happened to walk into the room at a rare moment of quietness … and she said an old Arabic proverb “… they had a daughter and they called her silence…”.
As we were creatively obsessed with the politics of gender, this became the abstract title for our show. We felt the performance as a whole had an atmosphere of ‘magic realism’.
